SD2IEC – The popular storage unit

Originally released in 2008, it uses an SD/MMC card and is one of the cheapest and most versatile devices available for a Commodore 64 computer. As it is compatible with most fast-loading expansion cards, such as The Final Cartridge III, the two make a great combination for use.

The SD2IEC is based on open source firmware in addition to SD/MMC cards, and the device itself has been available from a number of different places in a number of different formats since its release.

Variations include models with extra buttons and an LCD display, making everyday use easier.

As with the 1541-II, SD2IEC devices also include a physical switch to change the drive serial number (e.g. from the default 8 to 9). In addition to the switch, this can also be done in software thanks to the SD2IEC SNOOP utility:

One of the most popular ways to use the files on the memory card is CBM-Filebrowser, but CBM-Command file manager and SDBrowse, a two-panel file manager, are also great.

Other recommended utilities include Anders Persson’s SD2IEC DIR PLUS which in addition to navigation, allows you to copy and paste files between folders, rename files, etc., so you can organise the contents of your memory card as you like without a modern computer.

Good tip: For larger (multi-disc) games, the file formats that can be used with SD2IEC should always be .d81 and .m2i, as this is a great feature of the device that will automatically mount the correct side of the disk during gameplay.
