Unknown Realm: The Siege Perilous is an 8-bit fantasy role-playing game (RPG) developed by Stirring Dragon Games for the Commodore 64 and PC, drawing inspiration from classic ’80s RPGs such as Ultima and Wasteland.
Unknown Realm: The Siege Perilous was designed using the aesthetics of some of the most beloved 8-bit role-playing games of the 80’s. From the graphics style and gameplay, to the Collector’s Edition box, this game captures the essence of what made the 80’s the true golden age of RPGs.

First showcased at the Commodore Vegas Expo in 2012, the project gained significant attention through a successful Kickstarter campaign launched in December 2016, raising $126,343 from 1,246 backers with a goal of $65,536. Despite initial plans for a February 2017 release, the game has yet to be launched as of May 2, 2025, leading to a complex development history marked by delays and community controversy.
This project made possible by the support of over 1200 dedicated 8-bit RPG fans!
Game Features and Design
The game is set in a medieval fantasy world where players search for a missing uncle, uncovering a magical realm. It blends the nostalgic low-resolution graphics and gameplay of ’80s RPGs with modern enhancements, including automatic mapping, in-game journals, and real-time cutscenes.

Key features
- An open world with hidden locations, offering exploration opportunities.
- A reactive environment where player decisions influence the game world, enhancing replayability.
- Dual views: an overhead world map for navigation and detailed location views for interaction.
- Dynamic NPCs, animal companions, and the ability to recruit mercenaries, adding depth to interactions.
- A simplified interface to minimize resource management, making it accessible for modern players.
- The C64 version is designed to be the largest 8-bit RPG cartridge, featuring fast load times for an optimized experience.
- The soundtrack, composed by legendary C64 musician Chris Huelsbeck, adds a significant nostalgic appeal, with his involvement announced in a 2024 Kickstarter update (Kickstarter update on music).
We chose the beloved Commodore 64 as the 8-bit system to develop for because in our opinion it has the best feature set of all the 8-bit systems. It also happens to hold the record as the best selling personal computer of all time.
Development History and Delays
The Kickstarter campaign concluded successfully in January 2017, with an initial release target of February 2017. However, the game has faced significant delays, with developers providing sparse updates, leading to frustration among backers. For instance, a 2020 Kickstarter update focused on a website redesign rather than game progress (Kickstarter update on website), and there have been instances of requesting additional funding without substantial progress, as noted on forums like Lemon64.
A notable milestone occurred in September 2024, when a beta version was showcased at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, receiving positive feedback, as mentioned in a March 12, 2025, update on GOG.com. Despite this, no concrete release date has been announced, and the community has labeled the project “vaporware” on platforms like RPG Codex, reflecting concerns about its completion.
Current Status and 2025 Release Plans
As of May 2, 2025, “Unknown Realm: The Siege Perilous” remains in development, with Stirring Dragon Games targeting a 2025 release. The March 12, 2025, GOG.com update highlighted the beta preview at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, where feedback was positive, and noted the presence of Scott Adams, a pioneer in interactive adventure games, at the event. The developers are most active on X (@UnknownRealmSDG), with recent posts on April 28, 2025, sharing details about the game’s music (X post on music), but no new release date information was provided. Fans are encouraged to subscribe to the newsletter on stirringdragon.games for updates, as the developers plan to move updates away from Kickstarter post-release.
The community remains skeptical, with forums like Lemon64 expressing frustration over the lack of transparency and long delays. Some backers have accused the project of being fraudulent, citing the developers’ perceived arrogance and repeated requests for additional funding without progress.

Conclusion and Recommendations
As of May 2, 2025, “Unknown Realm: The Siege Perilous” is still in development, with Stirring Dragon Games aiming for a 2025 release but without a confirmed date. The game has faced significant delays and community skepticism due to poor communication and unfulfilled promises. However, recent updates, including the beta showcase and positive feedback, suggest progress. Fans are advised to follow the developers on X (@UnknownRealmSDG) and subscribe to their newsletter for the latest news. The exact release date remains uncertain, and the project’s future is viewed with cautious optimism, given the history of delays.

Gosh – nice review/update! I am a backer of this project, and I had given it up for dead, but maybe it will see the light of day after all! Your article was better and way more informative than anything I have seen from the creators. Thanks for posting this, and here’s hoping that it I can someday play this game.

Hi Rusty. It has been a pleasure to get my work out to people like you. Those who have been left alone for years after providing support deserve so much more, but I hope that soon the project will be finished and everyone will be able to enjoy this great work.
