MiniMIKE – still in development

The game is an amazing platformer by Paul Nicholls (Syntax Error Software) where you play as an explorer stranded on an alien world where everything seems gigantic.

Development was paused for a long time while the creator worked on other projects called Hexed and ROGUEish and now continued with some more ideas and improvements.

mini MIKE and the Caverns of Doom – A challenging C64 demo featuring a tiny character that is a bit like Load Runner, except with deadly traps.

Features

  • Screen-based progression: The game is structured around individual screens, with each one presenting a distinct challenge for the player to overcome.
  • Rescue missions: Mike’s goal is to rescue his fellow companions while dodging hazards and navigating tricky terrain.
  • Deadly traps: Spikes and other dangers are scattered throughout the caverns, making careful movement essential.
  • Enemy avoidance: Known as “Nasties,” the enemies must be cleverly avoided—timing and precision are key.
  • Puzzle-solving: Certain screens require logical thinking to unlock the path forward.
  • Snappy, responsive controls: The gameplay feels tight and accurate, rewarding sharp reflexes and deliberate movement.

The whole game has a very imaginative atmosphere and reminds me of great games like Lode Runner and VVVVVVV. Here is the newest video but now about the idea of using ladders in the final game:

In addition to the downloadable game demo, a short browser-based demo is available to show the basic gameplay. It contains only a few tracks and does not include all the final elements.

Technical Details

  • Development Environment: miniMike is being developed using Pas6502, a Pascal-to-6502 cross-compiler, allowing the developer to write code in Pascal and compile it for the C64’s 6502 processor. This represents a modern approach to retro game development.
  • Physics Engine: The game’s physics system is notably advanced:
    • Jumping: A core mechanic typical of platformers, enabling the character to navigate obstacles.
    • Wall Sliding and Wall Walking: These features add dynamic movement options, increasing gameplay complexity.
    • Ladder Interaction: Recently added, ladders expand level design possibilities and were previously a missing feature.
  • The developer has successfully replicated all physics mechanics, suggesting smooth and polished gameplay potential.

The visuals resemble modern indie games despite being on a classic system, and the controls are praised for being smooth and responsive. Its level design and tight mechanics make it a satisfying experience.

miniMike is a promising platformer in development for the Commodore 64, blending classic jump-and-run gameplay with modern development techniques. For further updates you can follow us with SyntaxErrorSoft posts or C64 community forums.
