Gun Runner (1994, Mnemonic Productions)

A very rare and hidden gem I’ve found recently and recommend to all of you for the weekend to explore and enjoy. Its originally from the 90’s years of the Commodore 64 life which is an adventure with trading/delivery elements.

Gun Runner is one of those scrappy, lateโ€‘cycle C64 curios: a compact sciโ€‘fi adventure that mixes riskโ€‘laden delivery runs with just enough trading and upgrading to hook the strategist in you. Itโ€™s small, punchy, and unapologetically oldโ€‘schoolโ€”perfect if you crave that โ€œone more runโ€ loop with a hint of narrative danger.

Story

You pick up a distress transmission from Military Patrol Vessel Alpha Niner – cut off midโ€‘report as pirates descend. This isnโ€™t heroics so much as survival: threading hostile space, taking jobs, and scraping together enough creds to keep your ship (and hopes) intact. Itโ€™s a lean, utilitarian setup that frames every decision with tension and purpose.

Features

  • Delivery runs for income: Take on jobs to earn credits, pick routes, and balance risk versus reward. The sector is dangerous; carelessness is costly.
  • Ship upgrades: Profits funnel directly into making your craft tougher and more capable, unlocking bolder choices and safer margins over time.
  • Commodities exchange: Prices move, deals appear, and a savvy buyโ€‘low/sellโ€‘high keeps your bankroll healthy between runs.
  • Tight focus: No sprawling RPG sprawlโ€”just concise, highโ€‘stakes choices that accumulate into momentum.
  • Constant calculation: Is this route worth the risk? Upgrade shields now or engines later? Sell today or wait a cycle?
  • Story as pressure: The pirateโ€‘ridden sector is less lore dump, more ambienceโ€”a reason your palms sweat when you commit to a run.

Tips for your first hour

  • Stabilize your economy: Favor safer, shorter deliveries until youโ€™ve funded core survivability upgrades.
  • Trade opportunistically: Check the commodities exchange after every run; small margins early compound quickly.
  • Upgrade with intent: Prioritize survivability and maneuverability before chasing speed; living to deliver is the real profit.
  • Save frequently, especially before making major investments.

Who will love this

  • Fans of minimalist spaceโ€‘trader vibes who enjoy making lean, consequential choices.
  • C64 enthusiasts looking for a lateโ€‘era title that blends arcade tension with lightweight economic play.
  • Players who prefer progression arcs built on smart risk management rather than grinding.

Development background

Mnemonic Productions released a handful of C64 games, mainly associated with John Patrick Green, in the period 1993โ€“1994 (e.g., Melee: The Battle Boardgame โ€“ 1993; The Castle of Kraizar โ€“ 1993). Gun Runner is also on the publishing list, which puts the studio’s profile and era into context.

Gun Runner isnโ€™t loud; itโ€™s surgical. It distills spacefaring hustle into a tight loop where every credit matters and every upgrade is a small victory against a hostile sector. If that simplicity speaks to you, this is a compact gem worth your time.
