Lemmings Reimagined

Retro gaming fans, rejoice! Developer Jörg Karwath is breathing new life into the legendary Lemmings franchise with a stunning new version built entirely for the Commodore 64. But this isn’t just a nostalgic remake – it’s a technical tour de force that pushes the boundaries of what an 8-bit machine can do.

What’s the Project About?

Jörg Karwath (@joeyvc64), a passionate C64 developer from Munich, is crafting a full-fledged Lemmings experience for the Commodore 64. The goal? To deliver a visually rich, mechanically complete version of the game that honors the original while showcasing what the C64 is truly capable of.

Major Advancements Over the Original C64 Port

The original Lemmings port for the C64 (circa 1993) was heavily limited:

  • Few playable levels
  • Basic sprite handling
  • Sluggish scrolling
  • Minimal sound design

The original game

Karwath’s version, however, is a quantum leap forward:

  • Full-screen soft scrolling – a rare and difficult feat on the C64, now fully functional.
  • Detailed sprite animations – Lemmings walk, dig, bash, and build in real time.
  • Multi-channel SID music and sound effects – simultaneous playback of music and SFX across multiple channels.
  • Complex level design – the first level, designed by @JohnHen65953721, features rich cavernous environments.
  • Advanced mechanics – collision detection, elevators, doors, moving objects, and dynamic interactions are all in place.

The new game

Gameplay Experience

The classic Lemmings gameplay remains intact: guide your quirky crew to safety using a variety of skills like digging, building, and climbing. But now, it’s wrapped in a technically impressive package that feels fresh and surprisingly fluid for an 8-bit system.

Follow the Development

The game is still in active development, but Karwath regularly shares updates, videos, and technical insights on X (formerly Twitter). The community is buzzing with excitement, and the project is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious C64 releases in years.
