Meshtastic 64 is a unique project by Jim_64 that connects the Commodore 64 to the Meshtastic LoRa network. It combines old hardware with modern communication protocols and enables decentralized text messaging via a retro interface.
The goal was to create a Meshtastic-compatible radio module that plugs directly into the Commodore 64’s User Port.
The developer used a Heltec LoRa V3 board to design a custom PCB, which was placed in a cassette-type enclosure equipped with a display, USB-C port, antenna, and tactile buttons. The module communicates via a serial connection in TEXT_MODE mode, allowing simple ASCII messages to be sent and received.

The software is written in BASIC, preserving the nostalgic feel of the C64. It supports ASCII-PETSCII conversion, allowing PETSCII graphics to be transmitted. Users can create, save, and load graphics, with eight slots available for visual compositions. The interface includes a message editor and real-time communication with other Meshtastic nodes.
Requires a modern large power supply on your commodore 64 with at least 2.5Amps on the 5V line. The Nu-Brick at 3Amps works well.
