Disk Inspector for macOS


A new Commodore 64/128 Disk Image Editor has been released for macOS.

Disk Inspector is a native macOS application for viewing, editing, and managing Commodore 64 and C128 disk images. Designed for retro computing enthusiasts who need a modern, full-featured disk editor on their Mac.

SUPPORTED FORMATS

• D64 — 1541 single-sided (170 KB, 35 tracks)

• D71 — 1571 double-sided (340 KB, 70 tracks)

• D81 — 1581 (800 KB, 80 tracks)

FEATURES

File Management

• Authentic C64 directory listing with PETSCII styling

• Drag and drop files between multiple open disk images

• Copy, paste, rename, delete, and reorder files

• Multi-file selection (Cmd-click, Shift-click, Cmd-A)

• Import files from Mac / Export files to Mac

• Full undo/redo support

Hex Editor

• Click any byte to edit — type hex digits to change values

• Navigate with arrow keys, Tab, and keyboard

• Modified bytes highlighted in orange

• Save changes directly back to the disk image

BASIC Listing Viewer

• Auto-detects and detokenizes BASIC programs

• Supports both BASIC 2.0 (C64) and BASIC 7.0 (C128)

• Double-click any PRG file to see the listing

Visual BAM Map

• Color-coded sector grid for the entire disk

• See which sectors belong to which files

• Highlight a file’s complete sector chain

• Click any sector to edit it in hex

Disk Validation

• Detect BAM errors, cross-linked files, and orphaned sectors

• Verify sector chains and block counts

• Find duplicate filenames and corrupt entries

Export

• Export directory listing as plain text

• Export as styled HTML with C64 color theme

VICE Emulator Integration

• Launch disks directly in VICE (C64 or C128 mode)

• Run individual files from within Disk Inspector

• Configurable emulator paths

KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS

Cmd-C / Cmd-V — Copy / Paste files

Cmd-A — Select all

Cmd-Z / Cmd-Shift-Z — Undo / Redo

Cmd-S / Cmd-Shift-S — Save / Save As

Delete — Delete selected files

Double-click — View file (BASIC listing or Hex)

REQUIREMENTS

• macOS 14.0 (Sonoma) or later

• Apple Silicon or Intel Mac

• VICE emulator (optional, for Run in VICE feature)
