Chrome Horizon Demo by Stefano Coppi

A new shoot ’em up game similar to R-Type, which you can try out right now in a fantastic demo version.

Experience Chrome Horizon Demo, a proof of concept of a high-performance shoot ’em up for the Commodore 64, developed to showcase professional-grade game engineering.

You can try out this game, which offers a short but exciting level featuring a few enemies, power-ups, and, finally, a big boss. You can also relive those old-school feelings with the music surprisingly from the game Commando, which fits this game perfectly.

Chrome Horizon is a prototype of high-performance shoot ’em up developed as the flagship project for the upcoming book: “Modern Code, Classic Steel: Engineering Professional Action Games for the C64“.

Features

  • Engine: Written entirely in C using the Oscar64 compiler.
  • Visuals: Advanced Raster IRQ multiplexing, supporting 16+ simultaneous hardware sprites.
  • Scrolling: Ultra-smooth 50/60fps parallax scrolling logic.
  • Audio: Custom SID music routine integration.

Learn how to build this! This demo is not just a game; it’s a proof of concept. Every line of code, every hardware trick, and every optimization is explained in detail in my book.

The level featured in this prototype is purely a technical demo and does not represent a full, finished level.
